That would be insane 
The update would have to last at least two hours to force people to miss their stamina. Otherwise it makes things inconvenient, but not impossible.

In EST here on Android, it made me update about 5 min before 12, because I wanted to check War before it ended. It updated and never loaded up for me. I definitely never got the chance to collect anything and still can’t. It’s still possible if it’s not much longer, but I wasn’t expecting to be locked out as early as I was and as late as this is.

Same exact situation for me as well except I updated around 11:30am EST.
You could have refused to update at that time; I’ve had to do that before in order to log in and collect stamina before a server update.

Yeah It automatically updated for me and because of that I’m unable to get in at all sadly
