I posted this elsewhere this morning, but here is my personal thoughts!

Spoilers

So, starting with the intro. They introduced the basis of their entire world in like, a minute, and considering that they did pretty good. That said, the lore deserved a lot more explanation than was given. The map looked pretty cool and I liked the idea of going on a quest through the 5 different places.

The names of each place were kind of basic, lol. But easy to remember and they followed a theme so it still worked I guess.

The voice acting was fine to me, but at times I thought Raya sounded a lot like Rapunzel lol. Also, the time when all the tribes were standing outside of Raya’s palace at the start, I felt like the voices of the people in the crowd didn’t match their face? Like there was more emotion in the voice than in the face. Aside from that it always matched.

Raya, you dumb! Bringing some stranger up to the thing you’re supposed to be guarding with your life! But let’s face it, its her dads fault for putting a like 8 year old girl in charge of protecting the thing that maintains peace lol.

Namaari’s haircut was a little jarringly modern for an ancient kind of movie. But you get used to it, and I guess it works for her character.

And then there’s Noi, the completely unexplained advanced-intelligence con baby. I’m all for random unexplained things that act as comedic relief, but I didn’t really get that sense. It wasn’t really humorous, just kind of shows the state of the world? But it doesn’t help explain this evil genius baby lol.

Otherwise, Sisu, Boun, thug guy, the monkeys and Raya were all good enough made characters for me. Namaari was misunderstood, but in a way you expected her to be. None were exceptionally complex or groundbreaking, but they were developed and distinct. Though I wasn’t a fan of Sisu’s human design. I feel like if she could shapeshift into a human wearing clothes, the clothes would fit better lol.

The ending was satisfying, I’m not sure why Sisu was revived seeing as she died, not turned to stone, but better than keeping her dead I guess lol.

Overall Conclusion: Not my favourite Disney movie ever, since I don’t think they dedicated enough time to explaining the lore of the world they created. There was actually a decently large amount of things that go unexplained. (This is something I’ve noticed from Disney in general lately. It’s the details that make the movie, and they’ve been slacking on that lately IMO). At the same time, knowing these things aren’t essential to follow the movie; I wasn’t necessarily confused but maybe pulled out a bit at times, and not overwhelmingly impressed the way I expect to be from Disney. There were some giggles from Sisu, but it lacked a distinctly funny/charming moment that Disney usually slips in. Even still, it had enough emotion to be satisfying and account for those missing elements.

7/10 from me! Closer to the bottom of my Disney rankings, but considering this is Disney we’re talking about, minor slip ups have impact!

I just finished reading it.
My family compared Noi and the Ongis to the Penguins of Madagascar, and then we all started dubbing them as the penguins :joy: “Kowalski, steal that piece of the dragon gem”

That… actually makes more sense than I would’ve thought.

Watched it today! First time I’ve been to a cinema since Frozen II! :scream: And it was so amazing! I really enjoyed the movie and there were so many well-written characters and it was such fun. I especially liked Sisu and Noi (who is like my youngest brother: Cute, but pure evil)
It’s definitely one of my favorite Disney movies ever! My rating is 9/10
