Yeah, the movie isn’t visually creative. Raya looks a lot like Moana, Tong like Shan Yu, and this:
Doesn’t this give you Moana vibes?

Most people here have not even seen the film and making conclusions and this is why I never look at trailers or anything - to have no expectations.
Southeast Asia is similar in some areas to Polynesia geographically.
Yeah, I haven’t seen it yet but this is the obvious explanation for why the design is colliding between the two films.
Yep, once upon a time they recycled their frames but now everything is CGI and it doesn’t quite work that way. Models are made from scratch based on a sketch design.
I would guess the reason their proportions are so similar is because at a certain point of facial symmetry you arrive at something that is generally seen as ‘cute’ or ‘beautiful’ and obviously that’s an aesthetic they tend to set for their characters.
Cool. I learned something new about animation today. Maybe I should pass this along to my sibling who wants to be a Disney Animator…
That’s great! I would also love to be, but California is quite a ways from me
To be technical, it starts as a sketch, they choose colours & refine the design and everything, and then pass it off to sculptors, who create a physical 3D model of it - then animators use that with the sketches to determine size, proportions, colours, facial expressions, etc.
Haha, Moana reference.
