As far as I know, they can only be obtained via Contests.
25 Threads for passing the 1 Million Point Progress Threshold
The other 75, you can get them by placing at the Top 5 in the Contest.
I agree, PerBlue should make the Threads more obtainable, say, Gold Chests or at the Market.

They could do all kinds of things to make them more obtainable: mainly a costume shop or putting them in market circulation or diamond crate or anything that isn’t the VIP Crate really.
