Forum Spammers - Don't Encourage Them

Hi All,

Recently there have been quite a few issues with spammers and the use of profanity in unnecessary circumstances. Whether this is the same person using different accounts for fear of being found out or even just several young people who are socially unaware and feel targetted despite no one doing or saying anything bad about them I think we can all see that we are the ones who are encouraging this continual behaviour.

I am not exempt from this either as I did recently come upon an incident that I, unintentionally, kept alive. These people who come on the Forums only to start spamming and swearing at others do so for one reason and one reason only. The attention.

Clearly the first time they attempted something like this, be it on this Forum or another one, they must have received many messages in reply as a result. This entices them as they then start to feel like they are being heard and that all the attention is on them. When we reply to them saying “stop spamming” or “don’t do that”, etc. they see this as an opportunity to once again let out an insult. Our replies to them are like fodder. They long for the chance for someone to reply as this gives them what they feel is the required circumstances to insult someone.

The only way that we are going to stop these people, or even the same user with different accounts, is by completely ignoring them. @Polaris and the team are aware of these users and will get to it in their own time. We are essentially powerless over these other people so the best thing we can do is shut them out.

If you see a spammer:

  • Ignore them
  • Flag the post but don’t reply
  • Leave a comment asking @Polaris to shut the topic down, if the spammer started it, but only if no one else has. Once this specific comment has been made make no other comment.

Thank you,

Fellow Piglet

Yes, please flag those posts and then ignore them. I would ask that you not reply with an @ to me though. I review all the flags and will see the threads and take action on them through the flagging system. The extra mention isn’t necessary.

Cheers!

One of thosr forumers wouldn’t happened to be Vanuatu the Mapper by any chance would it?

Because he is one of the biggest culprits of spamming i have ever seen

(Notice that i did not a @ because i don’t want him coming in here and having one is conniption fits saying how i am mean and all that jazz.)

Leave him alone. He has stopped spamming and doesn’t need to be pestered with insults.

What we are supposed to do when we see a spammer

What we aren’t supposed to do but do anyway

This is just literally what we do

Umm, both situations show them either walking or running away. I don’t get your point.

Unless you’re saying that all the explosions are like us replying and making things worse.

I’m saying the walking away is what we are supposed to do, and the running away from it is what we aren’t supposed to do but do anyway, the explosions are the rules

But Rey and Finn are running away from the explosions not running into it.

Because they are running from the rules, like we do when we aren’t supposed to respond to the spammer

But you said running at it, which they aren’t.

Oh sorry, typo

You said running at it

Ok

it seems like every week there is a new spammer and then a few days later they realize they were not smart for doing it and well… ya know stop
Ex 1: Goodboyforeverjumpingjacks
Ex 2: Vanuatu the Mapper

Then they post an apology post and then go back spamming, not all of them do it, but some do

Good point.

Goodboyforeverjumpingjacks has actually really improved. They were annoying at first but have actually made some good contributions now.

100% agree. Some users can be as bad by replying, a urge to get the finale word maybe? But it makes them just as bad. And encourages them like you said. Great topic.

Thanks.

I 100% agree with you.

Unfortunately I was one of the people who did keep it going and afterwards I realised that I was only making the problem worse so that inspired me to make this topic,
