While testing against my brother, I noticed that the link between meg and heroes that appear in the fight after her target is chosen (such as gonzo) is functioning differently on offense and defense. Tested mirrored lineups to show the different links on the same heroes both on my attack and his.
Spawning issue.
Mainly due to the additional glitchy animation when defense team spawns in, causes link to take effect slightly later, so gonzo becomes the target.
