Missing: Tank Heroes

Last year (2021), we had 7 tank heroes (3 of which I’ve never seen used by others): 3 in January and 4 from April-July. Fred was the last tank, 9 months ago…
We’ve had 24 heroes released/announced since then (all in the other three roles).

Where are all of the tank heroes? Power creep made every tank hero irrelevant. Now they are just used for utility like fatigue.

I understand that some heroes wouldn’t fit the tank role, but you’re still completely ignoring tanks. And a start refresh on Baloo doesn’t count.

Damage comes out so fast nowadays it’s not practical to sit around tanking anymore.

And John, Baloo’s refresh made him good so at least there’s one more tank to use.

Luisa should be a tank, so maybe soon.

As a general rule I think every role should get at least 1 character represented every season, as in at least 1 every 3 months.

This way it should keep afloat the balance between the roles more, so when picking characters I recommend having that in mind PerBlue, so could you please pass this along to the team Loutre? :-).

So a whole role gets ignored?

Then a new tank can mitigate damage for the whole team or provide hardy. There are plenty of ways to make a tank relevant.

Oh yah John got a refresh. It was so minor that I forgot. I don’t even think Pb published the changes? Maybe, I forget.

Luisa would be an awesome tank

Unless you can somehow stop Zeus from one shotting the squad it’s pointless.

Mary (control) is already direct counters to Zeus’s immediate white (not sure why I thought Mim was…).
Not every character released has to counter/be better than Zeus.
And the problem is not necessarily stopping Zeus, it’s countering how the team protects Zeus (e.g. Mad Hatter + Zeus + Mary)

If a tank gave team hardy, then it would stop the stun.
If a tank reduced crit/crit damage, then it stop getting one-shot.
If a tank gave reflect, it would reflect the damage back.
etc. etc.

Regardless, the game shouldn’t ignore the tank role with or without Zeus.

No.

The problem is Zeus’s red skill which has literally no counter. He will spam his white skill as constantly draining all energy of his enemies, white skill will deal damage and stun-lock enemies, even if you got buffs to stop damage he will still lock you.
But for PB it’s O K. :woman_shrugging:t2:

A new tank will be completely pointless if they are not immune to negative effects and has sort of damage reduction as Shank or Bagheera.

If I see a Zeus, I’ll use Mary.
If I see a Zeus + Mad Hatter, then it’s way more of an issue.

Yah, it’s hard to counter, but it is counterable. If Mary didn’t exist, then it would be a huge issue.
Again, a new tank hero doesn’t have to only deal with Zeus, but we did mention how they could.

How you counter energy steal?

It depends on the team - most of the time Darkwing can just dodge the first hit and then deal with Zeus without being hit ever again.

But I do agree that tanks with the sole purpose of tanking are useless at this point, since most heroes do area damage anyway. They’re only good if they are tank/support (like Shank who reduces damage) or tank/control (like Carl).

Or vice-versa support+health adders as Timon (armor + crit removal during a skill), Joy (reality + HP increase) and Ariel (true damage counter + HP increase again)

Honestly at this point the entire concept of assigning a character to one role is outdated.

There have always been characters who didn’t really fit in any one role (looking at you, Felix), but it’s almost at the point where characters that neatly fit in one role are more the exception than the rule. We’ve got damage characters that stun, sap, remove buffs, steal energy, and more, as well as control characters that deal more damage than most damage characters, and even some support characters are now dealing pretty serious damage.

Yah once Zeus gets started, it’s insane. Gotta CC or kill before that.

Other conversation: As for roles, some heroes definitely blur the lines, but I wouldn’t say any heroes since Fred have been tanky.
And it’s also weird how many heroes are in the front. Typically, tanks were in front, but Fred is far back “front” and Sheriff starts in the back. Most likely, damage or control are in the front.

My Demona might as well be a tank because my main use for her is taking hits from the codebase and coming back.

I don’t know why Sheriff is classed as a tank anyway since his entire moveset screams control.

Demona is crazy. She can do insane damage, but she can also do absolutely nothing. Definitely damage.

Usually tanks have damage mitigation and are frontline. Sheriff has -80% from sapped enemies. Sheriff is weird, because he starts in the back (came out the same time as Esmeralda). They also have higher HP, armor, reality, and tenacity.

He’s tanky but his isn’t the role of tanking the damage on the front
He feels like he was thought mostly for his blue, for it either to counter the frontliner with Hamm disk or to snipe a control with Scrooge disk
