Oscar Nominations

Jada has a medical condition where he hair fell out and Chris made a joke about her receding hairline. It’s quite awful but there were many other ways Will could’ve handled it.

poor joke or not he’s a comedian and if you’re having a comedian present these things you’ve got to be prepared to get roasted :grimacing: and it’s not exactly the most offensive thing in the world, Ricky Gervais absolutely destroyed people last time and nobody hit him in the face  can’t just go round slapping anyone who offends you

the slap and everyone’s reaction and ensuing memes were indeed funnier than the joke, though, it wasn’t one of his best

So the Oscar telecast, put on by an organization largely funded by Disney and broadcast on a Disney-owned network, cuts (along with 7 other categories) the Best Animated Short category from the live ceremony. Then, for the Best Animated Feature category, the Oscars get three live-action Disney Princess actresses to present the award, so they can use the category’s introduction to promote the latest live-action adaptation of a Disney animated feature. Oh, and also repeat the stereotype that animation is just for kids.

And people wonder why I say (corporate) Disney doesn’t care about animation as an art form.

that must be a US (and to a lesser extent UK) thing, in Europe animation is pretty cool and in Asia it’s obviously massive, but here it’s rarely seen outside of kids or family channels

What is the problem again? ~

depends.

Will Smith - Chris Rock made an insensitive joke about Will Smith’s wife, and Smith slapped Rock. Pretty much it.

Animation being treated as ‘for kids’ - Animation has recently been treated terribly by the Oscars. They say animation is just for kids.

That’s not true at all. Otherwise it wouldn’t be a category in the Oscars.

I’m not an expert on how animation is perceived througout Europe, but here in the Netherlands, animation is also focused on /targeted to kids and seen as childish…

Best recent example with my local cinema is that Encanto was featured for quite some time, but the largest chunk of that, only in Dutch (and not in English). Usually, movies for adults won’t be released in Dutch at all if the original language is not Dutch. They would have subtitles instead. Movies considered for kids would usually have two versions: one in the original language (usually English) and one in Dutch.

What the example shows: Encanto with Dutch voices as the only featured version shows the cinema’s treat animation as for kids.

I would be interested to know if it’s different in other parts of Europe though! @Heros_Porcinet_XCIX and @Disney-Fan maybe you would like to react?

Well, not exactly Europe here, but I’m sure that here in Russia the English version was never legally available. Same with all Disney movies, the only exception I can remember is the Jungle Book remake for some reason.
Sadly, this “Animation is just for kids” rule is even stronger here, especially concidered that animated movies made by our studios never bring good profits. Doesn’t really surpriss me why the studios don’t even try and release some weird trash that even kids won’t like if they’ve seen at least one movie in their lives. The only good thing I can say about Russian animated industry is that they still did not abandon hand-drawn 2D, even if there’s just one 2D studio left with all others getting bankrupt

Let´s not forget the legendary Nu Pogodi!

Well…first of all, I mean the modern day, not the past. Second, I was talking about full-lengh movies, not shows. Thirdly, they reanimated Nu Pogodi in a 3D abomination last year

Ah okey. True, there aren´t many Russian full length movies.

And yet the presenters for that category joked about animation being something for kids to watch “over and over and over” while parents had to grin and bear it. Unfortunately, that’s certainly true for a lot of cartoons made, but even in the relatively safe, mostly-mainstream realm of Oscar nominees, most of the “kid’s” films are made with family entertainment in mind. And, of course, there are many animated features aimed directly at adults, such as Flee. It would be like the presenter of the Best Documentary Feature award joking about how documentaries are just a matter of making sure you have the lens cap off while filming something that’s happening in front of you. (Although in that case, at least you wouldn’t have most of the audience believing that’s actually true.)

The Hollywood Reporter has an annual feature called Brutally Honest Oscar Ballots, where voters anonymously share who or what they voted for and the reasons for their votes. While this year’s BHOBs are actually thoughtful regarding animated features (two of the four even voted for Flee!), the majority of responses in previous years made reference to voting for whichever cartoon best entertained their kids, or similar kid-focused reasoning.

Well here, all the films that come out in movie theaters are in French. I have never seen a movie with subtitles in the cinema. But I don’t know of a cinema in which you can see the films in English. But yeah, I never went in a cinema in a huge city so…

As for French animated films, most are just bad, except the adaptations of comics into films which are often successful.

Yeah I already expected something like that
Though language was more like an example of how live action and animation are treated different here in the Netherlands.

Question to you and DF was more like if animation was treated different, or as Pip said more appreciated.

Ah-

Oops

Anyway

I think that the animation is well seen here, even if the opinions differ. But I still think it’s mostly well seen. It really depends on the animation. But yeah, it’s globally more appreciated to me.

(Sorry, I didn’t really read the previous posts, because laziness)
