CHARACTER CONCEPT: Fa Mulan

We have had a couple warrior Princesses in the form of Moana and Merida so lets add another one to the list even if she isn’t exactly royalty. The bravest woman in China, Fa Mulan.

Maybe what I wanted, was to prove I could do things right

Mulan is a front line damage hero who specializes in out maneuvering her opponents with the strength of a man and the grace of a woman.

Fa Mulan enters the battle with a bow before unsheathing her sword

Fa Mulan when defeated gets on her knees and lays her sword down after which she bows to the enemy.

Fa Mulan celebrates a victory by sheathing her sword and Mushu popping up to her shoulder and giving the player a big grin while Mulan gives a sly smile of her own.

SL: Skill Level
SP: Skill Power
BD: Basic Damage

White Skill: Mushu Cannon
Mulan places a cannon on the ground and uses Mushu to light it. Mushu rides the cannon and, after a delay, hits the back most enemy dealing 125 + (50SL) + (0.8BD) Normal Damage

Green Skill: Last Resort
Mulan counters an enemy skill or attack with her trusty fan. If the skill is a projectile then damage is nullified. If the skill is melee or if it is a basic attack Mulan counters, Mulan takes 75% reduced damage and disarms the enemy for 5 seconds. Disarmed enemies cannot basic attack or use offensive skills. Mulan can only counter once every 7 seconds.

Blue Skill: Raging Fire
After using Mushu Cannon, Mulan’s sword will catch fire, causing her next 5 attacks to deal an extra 50 + (25SL) + (.95SP) fantastic damage over 4 seconds.

Purple Skill: Strength and Discipline
Mulan’s critical attacks now ignore Armor

Friendship disks:
DS: Disk Stars
DL: Disk Level

Lvl 91 Moana
Other Allies: Mr. I, Woody, Miguel
Swift as a Coursing River

Grants 120 + (5.75DL) Skill Power
While Raging Fire is active, gives +25%DS attack speed to Mulan

Other Allies: Bogo, Genie, Tia
Mysterious as the Dark Side of the Moon

Grants 80 + (15DL) Basic Damage
Mushu Cannon now fires an extra 1DS round. Every round after the first cannot crit and does 60 + 5%DS damage.

People seemed positive to my concept for Dr. Facilier so I wanted to give it another go round. Let me know what you guys think.

Can you give the reason/s why Mulan is friends with Moana and Stitch?

Moana I feel is the more obvious of the two. Both very strong women who save their world with the men they travel with, Maui and Shang being very much a symbol of strength but not what won the fight at the end of the day. Moana uses compassion and empathy and Mulan used ingenuity and creativity outside of raw power.

I had a couple ideas of who was going to be the second disk. I was just going to go with Merida as I had mention her alongside Moana in the intro of my OP. As I was going through the roster I had the idea to pair her with Stitch. The idea being Stitch is trying so hard to be more than a monster and wanted the love and respect of thoa different to him. Mulan very much has the same motives. As a woman she is seen as subservient and only to be a wife and mother, nothing more. Just as Stitch was created only to destroy, incapable of any emotion whatsoever including love. The idea of being more than what your “role” is supposed to be in the greater scheme.

It also helped with the Disk names. I had wanted to include lyrics of Make a Man out of you, specifically the chorus. The only one not included is the line “With all the force of a Great Typhoon.”
Moana being a common word in Polynesian languages meaning “Ocean” makes her the closest thing to a river. Stitch then in turn being alien fits with being “Mysterious as the Dark Side of the Moon”.

The other Allies are just ideas of 2 compositions featuring Mulan and her friend. Hope that gives you some insight.

To be honest i would stick make a man lyrics to shang! i made a character composition for him and i did one for Mulan to.

Oh have you? Would you mind linking it? I’d like to see how ours are different and similar. Also I did the lyrics of Make a Man simply because while Shang was training everyone he was especially cruel and unforgiving towards Ping. Having those words affect her most makes the most sense because she was trying to fit in so that way her Father wouldn’t be taken away and possibly die in the war.

Ooo! I love this a lot, you did an amazing job!
Just one question, how do you envision Mulan’s appearance in the game?
Reading the skill descriptions, I got the impression that she would appear in the robes she wore when she was battling the Huns at the Emperor’s palace in the movie.

Yeah I imagine her in a lighter garment as opposed to the armor she wore when she was Ping. I also personally invision her using the sword of Shan Yu but I could definitely see her using Fa Zhu’s sword as well. As for outfit perhaps like in the movie when she takes on the Huns in the palace or a similar look to her appearance in KH2.

Just like I said in her intro I see her being a very agile fighter with maybe one of the faster attack animations in the game with a reverse grip on her blade. Not as fast as Dash but faster than Quorra.

Glad you enjoyed it. Mulan is definitely a favorite of mine that I would love to see in the game at a later date. Perhaps for the Chinese New year we could get her.

A Chinese New Year release would be very fitting for her, and hopefully Shang and the other boys make an appearance.
Her Purple skill would be a tank’s nightmare, she’ll tear through them like paper. As if the flaming sword wasn’t bad enough. DoT and an ability to ignore Armor is a lethal combo.

Just wondering, do you think the Green skill would be more balanced with a effective level limit? It seems a little overpower if it can disarm enemies and reduce/nullify damage.

I went back and forth on that myself as well. I think it’s fairly balanced due to the fact that is can only happen once every so many seconds kinda in the same vain of Sparrow and Aladdin’s dodge and counter. I think if you put a level limit on that it would defeat the purpose of the move. It doesn’t exist as an act of strength but as an act of finese. The other part of this move that I feel makes it balanced is the fact that the enemy can still using healing or buffs meaning say if she counters Sulley’s blocks it just stops the damage of that one skill onto her and if she counters Sulley’s basic attack it still allows him to use Boo’s heal.

Also with the dot and armor ignore I feel it is relatively balance as well. As it really only affects characters with high armor such as Bogo, Baymax, Wall-E, Judy, etc. To characters with no or little armor it doesn’t have anywhere near the effect as opposed to a character in game already in Quorra who just does maximum hp damage with an attack that hits 7 times. That just indiscriminately kills everyone. The burn is also balanced imo because it’s only for the next 5 attacks. Meaning the damage it does is fixed. Increasing attack speed just makes it go off quicker rather than all attacks for the next 5 seconds.

Those are excellent points. It’s like you pointed out, it only happens once to one attack from one hero, but it doesn’t stop other enemy heroes from inflicting damage on Mulan. I’m also assuming such an ability wouldn’t be able to counter/nullify DoTs?

Depends on the DoT. If you talk about Frozone DoT which is tied to the target being frozen if Mulan blocks the freeze then that in turn wont make her take the DoT. If it blocks something like Cals Cy-Bug or Yax’s cloud then yes it would block the DoT since those moves don’t have a base damage that they deal. Now if it’s like JJ DoT and she blocks one hit of his white then the DoT doesn’t happen but if she blocks one and gets hit by another then that would trigger JJ DoT. Hope that makes sense.

How do YOU envision your "next" hero?

Next hero! Shang from mulan! White skill:Let’s get down to business! Shang grants all of his allies increased attack damage and attack speed and increased there reality for 10 seconds. Green skill: retrieve the arrow! Shang shoots a single arrow at an enemy dealing X amount of physical damage Blue skill: A captain! Shang promotes a single enemy unit flattering them and charming them to fight for him for X seconds. Purple skill: A debt to repay! Shang gives an enemy that is about to be KO’d …

Thus is for shang now lemme go get Mulan XD

Ideas for new heroes including skill sets!

I noticed lots of people want Mulan in the game. So I designed an entire skill set for her. Firstly she would be a tank and attacks with her sword as her normal attacks. Her first ability,she would fire a dragon cannon at her enemies dealing damage and burning them which is like Jack jack and barbossa’s burn abilities. Her second ability, Mulan would summon the three soldiers friends to fight for her. They deal damage and knockback. Her third ability is a passive. Because mulan is a lucky person…

Very cool. I don’t know how Shang would be in the game but I could definitely see him being a Tank. I may do a concept for him at some point.

As with Mulan it’s interesting we came up with similar ideas in using the cannon, having a burn effect, and a focus on criticals. I disagree with the sentiment of her being a Tank. She may pass for one if it were Ping but I don’t see them adding two versions of the same character.

I like the inclusion of Yao, Ling and Chen Po with the soldier skill but that seems too similar to other skills like Nick and Felix whites that ultimately don’t really go with her character. I do enjoy the ideas in it but they don’t seem explored enough. Just my own personal thoughts. Also not including friendship disks in the concept itself personally says a couple things about it. One: the ideas are kinda just thrown together with no purpose or meaning. Two: the creator of said concept doesn’t exactly know the characters enough to figure out how to make those characters interact and work together.

Please keep up the concepts as I don’t believe them to be bad they just seem… shallow. There is so much to work off of when it comes to Disney that there is no shortage of information on them. Go crazy and do some research to make them the best they could be.

XD true i havent mastered the art of friendahips. Partly cuz it is hard to piece them together. For example, Elastigirl’s friendship with vanalope gives her a piece of vanalope’s white skill(hutting the back enemy.) The same applies to felix’s friendship with Frozone (every sixth basic attack freezes the enemy) Where as other characters like jack jack and violets friendship are not related at all (jack jack basic attacks are now fantastic damage) so in truth thus dies maje them have greater variety and no limits, but it also seems over whelming to me. The problem is making a disk that isnt too OP or too weak. Like I thought Felix’s would be super OP (and it is in a way) but then nick charmed him and Felix started freezing MY troops! So yah i definitly need to work on that part of it just trying to explain why i never tried! But i suppose there is no reason i shouldnt try…maybe after i have more in game experiance with friendships.
