Discussion: 2D or 3D animation

I thought i would give a little discussion for the oncoming weekend while we wait for the patch note to come into the game. Just a little debate about question that have been on people minds for a while.

This weekend, i want to dicuss the return of 2D animation movies. On one hand, computer animation is a way of the times now adays. But on the other, everybody would probably prefer a little change of pace with 2D animation.

So the question for this weekend is: Should the Disney Animation Canon go back to 2D animation for a little while or just stick with 3D animation?

Personally I’d like to see a mix but overall I far prefer 3D animation.

They actually do 2d animation on the short films that played before the actual movie like feast (I love that short) or paperman which is kind of cgi and 2d combined

Personally I think 3D is superior in all ways :yum:

The old stuff is great, don’t get me wrong, but why downgrade when you have such incredible technology? 3D all the way!

I think it’d be good if they did stylized 2D animation movies every once in a while. No need to choose between the two. :slightly_smiling_face:

I think it’s possible that the enchanted sequel well have a new hand drawing animation returned so will see if we find out.

It works nicely for short films and even series sometimes, but for big budget films, there is plenty of reason to choose 3D over 2D.

I know some movies have been trying that 2D/3D merge, but for some reason I feel like it doesn’t suit the style of Disney/Pixar films.

For Enchanted I would understand having the 2D there, it might be a bit awkward to change the style between sequels.

I didn’t asked should Pixar go to 2D animation.

We all know that computer animation is Pixar’s strong suit. It’s what it was built on.

What i asked was should the DISNEY ANIMATION CANON should give 3D animation a rest and let 2D take over for a while or should they just stick with 3D animation. Don’t mind Pixar.

Still feel the same for both studios

Not exactly.

Either are fine, but I prefer 2D animation. More traditional and more wonderful to look at. Each frame is a single work of art.

Sure, 3D allows animation to be slightly easier, but it just doesn’t have the same amount of charm as 2D.

I know the difference, I’m just saying the 3D style is better suited for both studios, in my opinion.

2D is easier. 3D provides more room for precision. It’s smoother and the environment and ensemble characters can come to life and create a realism that 2D just can’t. The lightings and textures can create something unique for whatever universe they are trying to build.

Where 2D is charming, 3D is mesmerizing.

Pretty obvious to me Disney should stick to 3D animation. It looks realistic and the possibilities for light and composition are way bigger.

Going back to 2D would indeed only be understandable for Enchanted 2, but that’s it. For the rest it would be throw away the hard earned progress Disney had to get through in the years 1999-2009.

I’d love to see Disney use both. Moreover, I’d love to see Disney and Pixar experiment more with 3D/CGI animation; movies like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, The Peanuts Movie, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse have shown that it’s possible to use computers for more than just piling detail onto detail and making characters move more smoothly than reality. Soul had a little experimentation sprinkled throughout the movie, in ways that fully served the story, so I have hopes they’ll continue down that path.

“Kitbull”, “Burrow”, and to a lesser extent “Day and Night”, along with occasional 2D sequences in their features, prove that Pixar can do quite well in 2D; while I think it’s fitting that they stay focused on advancing the art of 3D CGI, if Pixar decided to try their hand at a hybrid, 2D, or even fully hand-drawn feature at some point in the future, I’m sure it would turn out excellent.

This is exactly how I feel. Sometimes I miss 2D.

I think you mean Disenchanted :slightly_smiling_face:

Yeah that one

We do have a DVD of the first one, but I’m not really a fan tbh.

I think there might be some generation spit here in terms of preference.

Millennials as in like early 1980s to early 1990s borns probably may lean towards 2D animation as that’s what they grew up with.
Zillennials as in 1995-1999 borns may more so vary as they grew up with 2D animation in early childhood and then 3D animation in late childhood or teen years.
Gen Z as in 2000 to 2012-ish borns or at least mid and late Gen Z likely grew up with 3D animation movies more so and as such may lean more so towards 3D preference wise.

While of course everyone has their own opinion and may divert from my general logic there, but yeah just what I assume based on what people may have grow up with.
.

As for my own opinion I think it would be cool if Disney make a 2D movie again now and then, although maybe a bit modernized style wise as to compensate the for the technological advancements within 3D, making the 2D feel more modern as such.

While I don’t know how many here watch anime, but anime and anime movies are a good example of that 2D are still good and there are examples of good 2D animation movies in the recent years such as Klaus and Wolfwalkers, even if yes those two probably aren’t the style Disney should necessarily go for, but they are good examples for 2D animation in recent years :-).

Blender, the 3D animation software got a 2D Animation option with the 2.8 update not that long ago, so I definitely do think there are possibilities within 2D animation still today in a relatively 3D heavy movie era.
Will be interesting to see how Blender’s 2D Animation option will affect the future of animation in general even if less the movie animation and more so shorts and series, still something.

So yeah, I don’t mind if Disney do some more 2D movies and I think that would be fun, or at least 3D movies that are more stylized like 2D animation or 2D Animation done in Blender :-).

Also part of Generation Z actually :joy:

Very true indeed in terms of Disney, but Pixar have been making 3D animation since 1995, so actually it has been around since Gen Z was born. For me personally the Pixar movies of my youth were much more impactfull than Disney movies made arround the same time. Not only because of 3D animation, but also because of better storytelling.

Technically 1995 and 1996 are being debated whether or not they are Millennials or Gen Z, it mainly depend on which source you use I think, especially for 1995 if not 1996 also.
So yeah, the group children that were born in the transition period from Millennials to Gen Z I suppose.

I meant like general animation wise technically and not just Disney, but I do see your point in terms of Pixar :-).
I have more so grown up with Disney rather than Pixar, so my bond would probably be closer to Disney than Pixar. Nothing wrong with Pixar of course though :-).

Debate mostly arround 1996 I think, but indeed arround halfway of the 90s is somewhere the split.

That’s very much okay! For me it’s probably mostly cause I grew up in Pixar’s golden age, while Disney was in the second ‘Dark age’.
