Please Change the Trial Team for the Mulan Characters

Also, Any comment of Merida in team red?? Do you need to against that as well?

She is most likely in the red team because of hair color, which has nothing to do with racism

Hey Ruby. Dont get me wrong. I dont disagree that in a perfect world colors dont matter and we can have colors without any preconcieved notions. But we arent in one. Take a look at my post. I said that some adults have cognitive reasoning to avoid any negative associations. But not kids. Let me give you an example. Let’s look at Incredibles. Now, I am a fully rational adult yet I have believed all this time that they are in a red team because it is their signature color (which might be the case). If so, PB themselves set the precedent on signature color having some effect on what team they end up at. And I am pretty sure I am not the only adult who also thinks that is the reason Incredibles are in the red team. So what do you think about the kids then? They are not dumb, but due to the fact their cognitive reasoning hasn’t fully developed yet they fill in the missing information in their logical process with certain leaps, which often stays with them for the rest of their lives. So this is not about direct racism, but rather helping future generations avoid the pitfalls of the current and the past ones by doing the right thing. It might be a small thing, but it would still be a step in right direction.

But mulan and li shang in yellow is a problem to you? How so?

:expressionless:

Hair color is different than skin color

What do you mean by this?

Thank you for explaining your thinking; I understand where you’re coming from but I don’t think I agree.

If a child does think that the Incredibles are in the red team because they wear red (which is a mere 5 out of a roster of 100+ who aren’t colour coordinated, more than likely coincidental), there’s just no chance they would think “If the Incredibles are red, the Mulan characters must be yellow”. When I read this thread, I’ll be honest in saying I’ve never heard the word yellow used in that way. Nor did their being in a yellow team cause me to think that of them.

The problem with creating so much fuss over something like this when it has 0 to do with racism is that its part of the reason why many people don’t take real racism as seriously as they should. They might see this as silly and become desensitized to more serious problems that actually do involve racism. I don’t want that and I’m sure you don’t either.

So it’s important that people don’t just blindly call racism when there isn’t any, in my honest opinion.

I think they were referring to Cherry Blossoms

Both are born with it. How come one is racist one is not?
As asian. I dont feel any problem with my skin color.

Just leave it here.

Hey Aiya. I am not going to lie - it is really, really tough for me to accept your reply as valid. That’s because of your unnecessary 'team pink’s comment earlier. I get the fact fo the strained relationship between China and HK and we are not going to discuss who is right or wrong but the fact that you insulted a Chinese person (and dont say it is a joke because then you are not adult enough to be having this conversation) is not right. But, for the sake of fairness, I will try to respond to you properly.
Liking a color has no relevance here. And if we are talking about symbolism of colors, then red is a symbol of luck, joy, and happiness. So red makes even more sense than yellow, no?
Also gonna jump on the Merida discussion (hey Filadae, sorry if I am butting in). Read my response to Ruby. I believe that PB looks at signature color of a character and then decides which team to place them in. So her being in red due to her being a red haired lass is them following the example of placing Incredibles there. But that’s the point! This shows that they placed them in yellow team after some deliberation, and you might think that it was intentional. I am sure it is not and it is just an honest mistake, but not everyone thinks like that. Please stop thinking about yourselves only and look at what others might infer as well.

Hair color isn’t something usually related to racism. But skin color is. Why do you think we refer to some people as the color of their skin? It isn’t like I’ll call someone with blue hair “blue” or someone with brown hair “brown”. It just doesn’t work like that.

As long as you are helpful I don’t care if you do

Since I am older I feel comfortable with my skin and my ethnicity now. But as a kid I was bullied about it and it made me feel upset and different and bad. I am Chinese but grew up in America so unfortunately I experienced racism and was called yellow before. There’s even a thing called Yellow Peril and from a small expert online in the 1870s “ the native white working-class demanded that the U.S government cease the immigration of “filthy yellow hordes” of Chinese people.”

Of course PB didn’t mean it like this but words have power. It might not be racism but it’s still an opportunity to learn. Many people here have said they haven’t heard about this insult and I feel it’s because people don’t hear or learn as much about racism against Asians.

Just my two cents here.

Hey Ruby. Thank you for a rational discussion. I do agree with your points of racism being a serious issue that I dont want to be diminished because of certain innocuous cases. For me this is not anyone being racist now. Not even indirectly. I only worry that having them in Yellow team might cause some people (mostly kids) to associate Asians with that color. So this is more about preventing racist behavior and thinking setting in in the mind of young people. I am sure we both agree we would like future generations to have as few of preconceived notions and negative associations as possible.

Thank you for such a good response Master. I couldn’t have phrased it better myself. Being rational and accepting of yourself now is easier than when you are a kid. I mentioned that I am a child of two races and it was really tough for me to know who I am. I don’t think anyone bullied me (so I am really sorry to hear you had to go through that) for not being ‘pure’ in my country but I had difficulty accepting myself because I heard both good and bad things about both of my ethnicities and I struggled with that. I sided with my mother’s side because I was raised in her country and as such heard worse things about my dad’d and I felt bad for neglecting his family and culture. Nowadays I talk to my dad’s family too but it is not the same. So yes, hearing preconceived notions and racist things against your ethnicity is tough and even now I am considering just changing my last name because I am trying to avoid being looked upon badly. It is sad that this all remained from my childhood, and therefore I want to make sure no one else goes through that.
