Are we going to have the same discussion when Pocahontas arrives and she gets put on the Red Team?
Considering the history and offensiveness of the term r**skin, most likely yes.
I just can’t understand why they had to put Mulan and Li Shang in Yellow team? There were no heroes from that movie before. So, if they wanted, they could make them into Red or Blue team (As for me, I’d love to have Mulan’s franchised heroes in Blue cause this team seriously lack of healers)
As a Asian, I was a little speechless (not in a good way) when seeing them in Yellow team. I didn’t overreact, feel hurt or anything but I couldn’t help but feel a little insensitive with that setup
So, yes, I’d hope they change Mulan’s team color. They did it with Beast once, I’m sure they could do it again
And to whoever flagged this post, is there something wrong with you? This post has no curse, no bad words, not off-topic, it’s just purely a feedback and you flagged it??? Do any of you guys know how to un-flag this post because I want to this post justice
Sorry Disantales, I fell asleep shortly after posting.
Again, I understand your fears and the problems you are trying to prevent, but saying that a Chinese person cannot go anywhere near the colour yellow is just not the way to go about it.
At the end of the day, this is a game. It is meant to entertain, not to educate. If by some insane coincidence a child thinks yellow team must mean yellow skin, then it is the parent’s job to correct them. It is not our job to completely separate Asian people from the colour yellow. Otherwise, I hope you’ll change your avatar, because of what it might be suggesting to children.
Can you imagine if this game were a sport, and a Chinese person was trying out for a team who’s main colour was yellow? What if then people called to have that Chinese person removed from the team simply because of the colour of their jersey, despite the complete disconnection between the slang term and a team colour?
Isn’t it wrong to take away a person’s opportunity out of fear?
This is exactly them same. We should not be teaching kids that Asians and the colour yellow cannot go together. And I will think it is absolutely absurd if anyone gets upset over having Pocahontas added to the red team.
We need to stop making these associations. We need to teach kids that it is wrong to call people names using these colours as derogatory terms. We should also teach them that we are all human and we can be a part of whatever we want, no matter the colour involved.
The problem with this idea that the colour yellow is taboo is that it’s situations like this that desensitize people to real racism. When I read this post, (in complete honesty, not to offend anyone) I immediately saw it as a publicity stunt. A call for attention. I guarantee you I’m not the only one, but while I am able to distinguish real racism from threads like this, not everyone is able to do that. Yellow as a colour should not offend people. Though it’s like you say, as someone rational, I can distinguish this from real racism but if a child (or someone irrational) sees this as a cry for attention and becomes conditioned to this mindset, in the future if someone actually is affected by the racist term yellow, they will be desensitized to it, and naturally think “it’s just another cry for attention”. Racism should be taken seriously, and this isn’t racism. Nor does it condone it.
What you are suggesting has good intent, but is actually even more dangerous in the long term.
I hope you’ll understand what I am trying to say. You shouldn’t have to feel the need to take opportunities away from yourself and others of Asian ethnicity because of the fear that someone might be racist. Someone is always going to be racist, but I guarantee you it’s not going to be because Mulan is in a yellow trial team.
I’m in no means to disrespect anyone here. A lot of concerns, have been raised, but what does this have to do with the game? Or why?
After reading the post and replies from what I understood, was about an emotion of insecurity by past experiences where may backlash because of 2 characters beeing in said team attached to a stereotype.
Are all servers against it? How many brought this up so far in any harmful form? Although I’m portuguese, I’m familiar with the “yellow” term, but the only thing I questioned seeing both Mulan and Shang on yellow team was, “when is the blue team’s turn? It has been a while now with no new characters”.
If this was risen about their set up skills making more sense in switching to another team, all in.
But now, looking to flag colour and skin for a matchup? Racism? Lets have graces for PB not coming up with a “White team” and “Black team” or this whole thing would have just turned into a giant roller coaster.
Who says red, blue, yellow team, could have been easily called by:
1,2,3
A,b,c
Circle, square, triangle
Peanut butter, Jelly, sandwich
Zero meaning besides a label team name and hero perks.
I’m really sorry to read about your experiences and bullying (I experienced myself), however don’t let a piece of something you relate, get the best out. And from a GAME. Until a person brings this up in a ugly way, in which I’ll more than gladly educate the individual myself, I wouldn’t bother much.
Isn’t the reason, for not wanting stereotypes, that something like this shouldn’t even been brought up in the first place? Both have no connection, unless you allow to get of your gut. By miles, something like this has no comparison from what real racism is.
Now if you excuse me. I need to open some crates. I need Shang for the next team trial.
No, it shows that you were being rude and hypocritical.
No one has “taken offence” over anything, we’d just be more comfortable if the Mulan characters were changed to a different team color. You all are pretending that we’re throwing a fit over this; we’re not. It’s not a big deal to change the trial color of two (now three, with Shan Yu) heroes.
I don’t agree with this post either, but there is a better way to get your point across.
If people really are looking to take offence, you are only encouraging these actions by making rude remarks like that.
You can put your opinion forward in a dignified way.
Maybe you’re not, but people are overreacting, and making the connection between their race and the trial team was unnecessary in the first place.
Why do you have to put two and two together. It’s just a colour on a team on a video game
This phrase means something is obvious. For example, I could put two and two together to figure out that The Evil Queen is coming because she’s mentioned in the status effect list.
I don’t see why anyone’s opposed to changing the color. What’s wrong with it? It makes some of us uncomfortable; if it doesn’t make you uncomfortable, good for you, but you’re not everyone.
I have a big problem with people taking something innocent and turning it into something ugly. There is nothing negative about being a part of the yellow trial team. So why turn it into something negative?
Nobody has made this trial team a racist concern except for the very people who are arguing against it. I just think it’s ridiculous. Tell me with honesty that any of you would have noticed if this thread hadn’t been made (and I find it quite unlikely that the OP would have made this bizarre connection without making a particular effort to look for it).
If someone was using this as something racist (I have no idea how they might do that), then I’d understand why people are uncomfortable. But that’s not the case. This complaint is just immature, sorry.
Ruby is doing a better job than me and yet @PawpsicleSticks your not replying to some valid points ?
It’s took a good 2 days after the update for someone to even mention this so clearly wasn’t a problem straight away.
Like I said people are trying to find someone to have fault with all the time life is too short
Dear vehement deniers,
I think thou doth protest too much.
Google “yellow slang”. Go ahead, We’ll wait…
Yellow as a derogatory term against asians is well known. Ignorance of that fact is no excuse to keep on with the claims of incredulity- go back and read the second page of results if you doubt it’s widespread usage. Continuing on with efforts to invalidate several people who have already explained the real pain: physical and otherwise associated with hate crimes and the specific use of labeling someone as yellow is hurtful and if deliberately repeated after being told the harm it causes means your part of the problem. If you honestly don’t see what the fuss is about just read other people threads and look it up!
So the precedent for harm has been clearly documented and explained. Keep going to the 3rd page of results if you still don’t get it- keep going to the 50th page, the earth isn’t flat and at some point one can either argue with empirical facts (the harm racist language causes has been studied, documented and quantified) or one can be a troll and bait others for some nefarious satisfaction.
Intent doesn’t matter. It’s not a crime. A Senior Producer already came on and explained about IP and why the choice was made. I think it was a rather defensive posture to take right away but I think we need to take them at their word that it was just laziness for the team assignation. Doesn’t matter why though. I didn’t mean to hit a car with my car but as a result of my actions harm has been committed against another. I am still liable for my actions. Doesn’t matter if you think a thing is just a joke if its offensive to parts of the community. The correct thing to do is to take swift action and change before it becomes a bigger thing. On a basic basic level: doesn’t make sense to possibly alienate a key segment of your customer base. Do it because Blue has the need. Or they could do it cuz ya know its the right thing to do.
P.s- absolutely yes , there will be outrage if Pocahontas is team Red. So just don’t. Go ahead and google that while your at it.
pps- if all this is new to you; go ahead and open another tab and google Song of the South while were at it.
You make excellent points. Racism is serious - but relating it to a Disney character’s trial team is unnecessary and completely diminishes the point of an argument that shouldn’t be related to this.
I’ve made my stance crystal clear on why it’s dangerous to make a fuss about this. I won’t say it again but this is just wrong.
If their bio had a line that said “Mulan is a yellow character who…” then yes, I completely understand that a sentence like that can be misinterpreted and should be reworded. But to act like the “Trial team: yellow” is the most horrible thing to see in their description, is just wrong. Selfish even, when compared to people who actually are suffering as victims of hare crime.
Asian people should be allowed to have their name near the colour yellow without having chaos ensue. The only stigma here is the one created by those of you with this dangerous mindset. I’m sorry so many of you can’t see the innocence in a game, worse yet a colour.
I say this in defence of those who actually are victims of racism. I hope that is understood.
Thank you so much for this post. Honestly, this topic would have already been resolved if everyone actually read this post.
Secondly, @LilRubyKinz: I just want to say that I completely understand your stance on this. I feel the exact same way. I’m glad that I’m not the only one who feels this way regarding blowing stuff up way out of proportion.
So yeah, my take on this essentially the same as Ruby. There is nothing racist about having Mulan and co in the Yellow Trial team. Because it simply has nothing to do with yellow. It’s just the name given to the trial to differentiate it from the other trials. The trials could have gotten numbers or letters like, 1, 2 and 3 or X, Y and Z. But they chose colors. And she’s put on the Yellow team because her skills will match with the other Yellow team members and nothing else. If you find something racist about it, it’s because you’re actively looking for it.
